According to London free paper City AM, Tom Gearing’s wine business is soaring after he fell at the last hurdle to become Alan Sugar’s business partner.
Going on the Apprentice may sound like a good idea after a few pints, but it's hardly a sound PR move for many candidates, who are usually selected for their hatefulness.
At a generous estimate, only about a quarter of the idiots fired – or even hired – by Lord Sugar ever make a remotely positive impact on the viewing public. But his firm Cult Wines, which sounds like a Scientology offshoot, has seen a 60 per cent increase in profits since he appeared on the show last summer.
Gearing’s wine trade now has an annual turnover of £3m, so he's clearly bucking expectations that former Apprentice candidates' only real chance of success is the race to become the next Village Idiot. But Gearing's success may turn out to have very little to do with his decision to be Lord Sugar's whipping boy last year. Seeing as Cult Wines doesn’t trade to the general public, the black hole in his reputation -- although to be fair, he did come out of it looking alright -- doesn't affect him as much as if he ran a retail business.
But that’s where Gearing says he’s heading next. Maybe it will backfire, but his ‘calculated’ risk of throwing himself in front of the cameras could well be paying off.
